SAMANTHA E ALESSANDRO: LO STATO VEGETATIVO E UNA VITA CHE NON PERDE IL SUO VALORE

Per Samantha D’Incà, 30 anni, i genitori stanno chiedendo che vengano staccati i supporti vitali, ossia idratazione e nutrizione. La ragazza era stata operata per una frattura alla gamba a seguito di un incidente, ma, mentre inizialmente tutto sembrava essere andato per il meglio, pochi giorni dopo il suo ritorno a casa la gamba ha iniziato a gonfiarsi, poi il ricovero, la polmonite, il collasso dei polmoni e il cervello per troppo tempo in ipossia. Samantha ora è ricoverata all’ospedale di Feltre in un reparto a lunga degenza dove viene nutrita e idratata artificialmente.

«Ai genitori di Samantha dico: lo so bene che è dura, ma la forza per andare avanti la potete trovare proprio nella tenacia che sta dimostrando vostra figlia. Per me è così, ogni giorno da oltre trent’anni. Non giudico la battaglia che stanno portando avanti, anzi, per certi versi la comprendo. Ma voglio sappiano che un’alternativa esiste». Queste le parole del padre di Alessandro Guarnieri, di Padova, vittima di un incidente in moto a 17 anni nel 1987; ora ha 51 anni e vive con i genitori ottantenni, assistito 24 ore su 24.
Per il medico non esistono margini di miglioramento, Alessandro viene alimentato con un sondino, alza le palpebre, non può comunicare, è in stato semi-vegetativo. Il dottor Leopold Saltuari di Innsbruck, lo stesso luminare che negli ultimi anni ha seguito il campione di Formula Uno Michael Schumacher e, di recente, si è occupato proprio del caso di Samantha D’Incà, ha preso in cura a suo tempo Alessandro. «Fu lui a dirmi che solo un miracolo avrebbe potuto guarire Alessandro – spiega papà Giampaolo – usò proprio quella parola, e da allora non abbiamo mai smesso di inseguirlo, quel miracolo».

Il fratello Andrea, di fronte alla fatica di tutti questi anni, propria e dei suoi genitori, cede alla stanchezza, nessuno può immaginare cosa significhi curare un altro essere umano per tutta la vita, lui, nella stessa situazione, preferirebbe la morte, piuttosto che dare questo carico ai suoi cari. Ma di fronte alla possibilità che Alessandro sopravviva ai suoi genitori, vede solo una soluzione: lui e il fratello Stefano si prenderanno, senza alcun dubbio, cura di lui.
Noi ci stringiamo attorno a questa famiglia distrutta da un dolore che però non ha tolto a papà Gianpaolo una certezza: l’indisponibilità della vita umana. Dice: «Il dubbio di staccare la spina non mi ha mai sfiorato la testa perché, per quanto sia difficile, di una cosa sono certo: un genitore dà la vita ma non spetta a lui dare la morte».

For Samantha D’Incà, 30, parents are asking for vital supports, i.e. hydration and nutrition, to be removed. The girl had been operated for a broken leg following an accident, but, while initially everything seemed to have gone well, a few days after her return home her leg began to swell, then hospitalisation, pneumonia, the collapse of the lungs and the brain left for too long in hypoxia. Samantha is now admitted to the Feltre hospital in a long-term ward where she is artificially fed and hydrated.

«To Samantha’s parents I say: I know very well that it is hard, but the strength to go on can be found precisely in the tenacity that your daughter is showing. For me it has been like this, every day for over thirty years. I do not judge the battle they are carrying out, on the contrary, in some ways I understand it. But I want them to know that there is an alternative”. These are the words of the father of Alessandro Guarnieri, from Padua, victim of a motorcycle accident at the age of 17 in 1987; now he is 51 years old and lives with his 80-year-old parents, assisted 24 hours a day.
For the doctor there is no room for improvement, Alessandro is fed with a tube, raises his eyelids, cannot communicate, he is in a semi-vegetative state. Dr. Leopold Saltuari from Innsbruck, the same luminary who in recent years has followed the Formula One champion Michael Schumacher and, recently, has dealt with the case of Samantha D’Incà, took care of Alessandro at that time. “It was him who told me that only a miracle could have healed Alessandro – explains dad Giampaolo – he used that very word, and since then we have never stopped chasing him, that miracle”.

His brother Andrea, faced with the fatigue of all these years, his own and his parents, surrender to the tiredness, no one can imagine what it means to cure another human being for a life, he, in the same situation, would prefer death rather than give this burden to his loved ones. But faced with the possibility that Alessandro outlives his parents, he can see only one solution: he and his brother Stefano will, without a doubt, take care of him.
We huddle around this family destroyed by a pain which, however, did not take away from father Gianpaolo a certainty: the unavailability of human life. He says: “The doubt of pulling the plug has never touched my head because, as difficult as it is, I am sure of one thing: a parent gives life but it is not up to him to give death.”
